JOINT STATEMENT - Johanna & Candice

The artists invite YOU to play the board game ‘Squatopoly’ in a room delineated by beacons of light and set against a printed backdrop of a townhouse and graffiti. Here you will find a community where there is room for everyone and all are welcome. Human involvement is essential to the experience of ‘room’, whether it be a physical/virtual space, or the opportunity for action. In the game, like life, there are rules and limitations. Yet we have the freedom to choose our next move, based on the parameters in that moment in time - imposed or assumed. Perception plays a huge role in that choice.

Though the shapes, sizes and colours of the illuminated giant chess pieces are different, the elements are identical; allegorical of how humans are essentially the same and yet unique. The light in these pieces represents the light within each of us. This light, no matter how small or dim, will ever quench the dark.
